Oftmals stellt sich beim Aufbau von MOSS 2007 die Frage, inwieweit es sinnvoll ist, die Inhalte auf unterschiedliche SiteCollections aufzuteilen, oder sie in nur einer SiteCollection zu halten. Hier einige Überlegungen dazu (ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit ) 

While setting up a MOSS it must be considered if the contend will be based in many different sitecollections or in a single sitecollection. The following article sets up a few of these considerations (without guarantee for totality )

Die Entscheidung, ob man eine oder mehrere SiteCollections benutzen sollte kann eventuell anhand einer Gegenüberstellung von Vor- und Nachteilen getroffen werden:

Vorteile

•  Verwaltung / Administration von Gruppen und Benutzern zentral. Auf Ebene der SiteCollection ist jederzeit sichtbar, welche Benutzer und Gruppen auf welcher Ebene der Sitecollection tatsächlich Berechtigungen besitzen
• Implementieren von zentralen policies einfacher zu realisieren
• Verwaltung von Features erfolgt zentral über eine SiteCollection
• Templates werden in einer zentralen Gallerie vorgehalten und gepflegt (Listtemplates, SiteTemplates, Masterseiten, etc)
• Zentrale Verwaltung von Quotas und Locks

Nachteile
———-

• Delegation von SiteCollection-Administrationsrechten nicht einfach beschränkbar auf Teile einer SiteCollection
•  Features gelten immer für die gesamte SiteCollection und können nicht auf Site-Ebene eingeschränkt werden
• Backup und Restore per Standard-Features nur über die gesamte SiteCollection durchführbar. Wiederherstellung nur eines einzelnen SubWebs der SiteCollection sehr aufwendig
• Wenn viele SubWebs eigene Berechtigungen verwenden, wird die Vielzahl von Benutzern und Gruppen auf SiteCollection Level schnell unübersichtlich
• Aufteilung in unterschiedliche Inhaltsbereiche mit eventuell unterschiedlichen Designs, Templates, Inhaltstypen schwerer zu handhaben, als mit unterschiedlichen SiteCollections

Mehrere SiteCollections Was vorstehend als Vor- und Nachteile aufgeführt aufgeführt wurde, kann hier in ungekehrter Anordnung angewendet werden. Zusätzlich ist anzumerken, dass verschiedenen SiteCollections auch hinsichtlich der Inhaltsdatenbanken im SQL-Server getrennt angelegt werden können, was natürlich sehr zu Datensicherheit (Widerherstellbarkeit) beiträgt.

PROs

• Administration and handling of groups and users in one place. Where a user or group has specific access to can be reviewed on sitecollection level
• Implementieren von zentralen policies einfacher zu realisieren
• Feature management in one central location
• Administration and maintenance of templates in central galleries (list templates, site templates, content types etc)
• Quotas and locks manageble per one location

Contras
———-

• Delegation of site admin admin rights not easily to handle
• Features can not be contained to specific locations. The are always usable within the whole of the sitecollection
• Backup and restore can be done only for the sitecollection as a whole. If a single subweb has to be restored it is an effort
• Rights management can become confusing if a lot of the subwebs do not inherit rights and have their own access groups
• Difficult to split different content with different designs and different content types and templates

Multiple SiteCollections What was mentioned above can be reversed when looking at pros and contras of using multiple sitecollections. In addition it should be mentioned that using multiple sitecollections supports spliting the database content into multiple databases (SQL-Server). This makes it easier to restore data should the worst case of data loss occur.
